Groenveld Barn

Suffolk

Private client

2005

Barn conversions represent a dramatic change of use from the industrial to the domestic. For this particular conversion, in Suffolk, we took a timber-framed barn in the local vernacular and reworked it as a contemporary home.

We sought to respect the agricultural heritage of the building, and the huge volumes framed by massive timber beams. This sense of volume was preserved by allowing the inserted mezzanine floor – constructed in lightweight materials – to float within the original structure so old and new co-exist without compromise.
