Wenlock Works

Old Street

Schroder Real Estate

2020

The refurbishment of this 1980s building takes its cues from the generous volumes and factory styling of a more distant past.

We then improved the relationship between inside and out, creating large double-height openings at street level to open up the lower floors, which house a mix of office and retail space. Level access into a significantly reconfigured reception area and improved planting also help the building to sit more comfortably in its surroundings.

We added two new storeys at roof level and a rear extension which, together, increase the floor area of the building by almost 50 per cent, giving a total of 167,000 square feet. The exterior has also been refreshed. At the lower levels, the large openings are framed in high quality grey Petersen Kolumba brick which breaks down the scale of the building and differentiates it – in colour – from the brickwork of the surrounding residential properties. The openings themselves are filled with factory-style curtain walling.

"This project is an exemplar for reuse of an existing building, introducing high-quality materials and craftmanship with a simple and handsome palette. Through extension, remodelling and recladding, the building's relationship to its surroundings has been uplifted, notably at street and pavement level. Shepherdess Walk has long been an outrider for the hipper elements of the Shoreditch design and tech community, and Wenlock Works now holds its southern end as more of a backdrop than an iconic architectural statement."
